Herkimer County is located in central part of New York state. The northern part of the county is in the Adirondack State Park. The Mohawk River flows across the south part of the county. Herkimer County has a total area of approximately 1458 square miles of which 97% is land and 3% water. As of the census of 2000, there were 64,427 people, 25,734 households, and 17,113 families residing in Herkimer County. Out of New York's 58 counties, the county ranks as 34th most populous.The county is named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died in a 1777 battle.
